I have had a Suzuki DT85 1985 motor under repair for 3 months. Now the water pump is not pumping strong enough. Replaced impeller and mechanic believes it might be the pump housing. Is that possible. Crank and one of the pistons replaced. Had trouble in getting the engine bottom bolts out, which had to be drilled out. Could some of the water channels have been damaged causing the water not to be able flow properly? Are there some simple tests one can perform without stripping the motor again?

andrew,<br /><br />It could be the housing. However, I believe I would look at the water pipe between the water pump and the power head.<br /><br />Corrosion could have set in or it was not seated properly when the lower unit was reinstalled.

There is a plastic check valve and spring on the port side of the middle cyl. between the block and the head. Did it get put back when you put the head back on? If not water will get up to middle cyl. and dump right back down.

Re: Suzuki water cooler

Thank you for your replies, I will be giving them to my mechanic. We have swopped the lower gearbox unit from the second engine and the reconditioned motor is now pumping water nicely. So it points to something in the pump. We shall replace whatever is movable. Will keep you posted. After buying my dream boat I have had to wait patiently for 3 months while the fish are just jumping out the water. 11/3/2003

Re: Suzuki water cooler

Just a quick thought. This motor has a plate under the impeller housing. If it is installed upside down the inlet and outlet of the pump are between the same arms of the impeller and flow is very poor. I think looking from the propeller end the lower plate slot should be to the left. How do i know i got it wrong once.<br />regards<br /><br />"You must learn from the mistakes of others because you will not have time to make them all yourself"
