I am having trouble with my motor, it is a 1993 suzuki 65 hp, when i take off and get going good, my motor dies down , like a cylinder or something cuts out. I have to rev it up in neutral to get the motor running right again, i dont know what the problem is, it does need a tune up but it really just started giving me problems

Howdy, Liltiv.

Go to www.outboardrepairs.com and look up power loss. You will get a lot of advice.

If that doesn't lead you to your cause, come back here and tell us what you did and what the results were.

Good luck. :)

Re: Suzuki problems

Hello:
I had a 55hp which on occasion would seem to cut down in power on acceleration or if I hit some heavy waves. When I let up on the throttle and went again often it would run great as if nothing had happened. Drove me crazy for years. Does this sound familiar? It turned out to be a water flow sensor (float switch) which had become saturated and would activate the rev-limiter believing there was an overhead situation (ie lack of waterflow) Great feature but in this case gave me fits.

If you remove the engine cover look on the upper right side of the engine for a sensor with a couple of screws and a wire coming out (near the rear. The sensor is pricey but you can do it with a screwdriver in a few minutes so you don't need to pay a mechanic. I think this should do the trick.

Re: Suzuki problems

I'd start with new spark plugs if its been a while since the last tune up. Also clean out the carbs. Both are cheap and common causes of problems. Motor timing doesn't seem to change over time.
regards Sirlespat

Re: Suzuki problems

I had a crb kit put in the other day and I went this morning to run it, it is still doing the same thing, it runs good for a little while then boggs down, what the hell is the problem, is there a such thing as a water sensor?

Re: Suzuki problems

liltiv:
There is a float switch (water flow sensor) as I mentioned earlier which caused my engine to cut down in power. It gave the impression of running on one less cylinder. If you throttle down to an idle the engine will usually run fine after. The switch activates the rev limiter. Look for it where I described earlier. My 55 is basically the same engine as the 65.

Re: Suzuki problems

I believe that if you unplug the wire off of this sensor (float switch) and the problem goes away then I'd say you've found your answer. The sensor at the time I had replaced cost me close to $90 Canadian or about $50-60 US. If the problem you decribe comes and goes and the motor otherwise runs great I would say my gut feeling is that sensor the ticket.
