JB, I'm interested in your opinion on something. I just read your response to Lunker 10/31/01 re his question of what outboard to purchase. In your reply you mentioned "On a 2 stroke engine, I'll still take carbs, (and premix) but on a 4 stroke EFI is not only much more reliable, it is more efficient and easier to use"

I have a 1989 Suzuki DT85, it's oil injected. By your comments if you owned this engine would you disconnect the oil injection and premix the oil & gas yourself or would you rely on the Suzuki warning system to let you know theres a problem BEFORE its too late ? It has an oil flow & oil level warning lamp/buzzer.

Thanks
Mike

Re: Suzuki Oil Injection

G'Day, Mike. You are correct. I would probably disconnect everything associated with oil injection and run premix. My reasoning is that there would no longer be ANY chance of the engine running without lubricant.

I have no personal experience with Suzi oil injection systems and have heard no complaints.

I just believe that if a failure can occur. . . sooner or later it will.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

The thing has allready made it how long the way it is, and you want to make changes now?

Some of those old injection systems were flawless.

Re: Suzuki Oil Injection

Hi Kiwi,

I have a much older suzuki DT75 (only has oil level warning). I am not a experienced boat owner but I have thought about this problem too. Oil injection probably reduces carb problems if you don't get to use your boat regularly but if it fails $$$$$$$.
i decided to trust it but each maintenance I use premix until I can verify that the oil tank level is dropping. Also if you run out of oil use premix until you are sure. There is a filter for the oil which may need occaissional replacement. Are you sure the monitoring works? I check the low level alarm each year but I not sure how to simulate low oil flow without opening the system (really not advised) How does it sense oil flow?
Cheers
They seem to be reliable engines.

Re: Suzuki Oil Injection

By not using the injector you have a potential human error everytime you fill the tank, just forget once and thats all it takes. It can happen easier than you think.

There is no warning horn for this type of failure. I would like to see data on how many motors have been destroyed by pump failure, or human error during manual mixing, I bet someone who works on them everyday would know, someone who worked on motors in the years before injection systems and after would probably know best.

I speak from experience, I have only wrecked one motor in my life, and it was a liitle Merc that required manual mix, But I guess the bright side is, it was only a Mercury ;) :)

Re: Suzuki Oil Injection

Thanks JB, its interesting as you say, I have heard no real complaints about the Suzi oil system, or infact the outboards as a whole, so that in itself must be good !
Yepblaze, I have only had this boat for a few months, prior to that I had a '73 Evinrude, so this is the first motor I have owned which has oil injection, and as yet we dont have a trust thing going !!
Sirlespat - Hi from across the ditch ! Good idea about the premix after a maintenance check, I might do that. According to my workshop manual there is an oil flow switch in the oil line that checks oil flow. I guess it must be very sensitive as oil would be flowing very slowly. Like you I have no idea how to check that sensor, I reckon 'leave well alone' on that one ! I have checked all the other warning system sensors and all are working ok. Where in Oz are you ?

Thanks for all your replies.

Mike
