'83 85HP Suzuki DT85 8501 310056
Original owner ran motor too rich, burned hole through #3, lost compression. Free motor for me, quick winter project. Took apart motor, honed #3 and replaced piston. Rebuilt motor w/new gaskets as such. No problems until start up, no start. Compression great on all three. Noticed no spark, could it be improper timing? If so how do I fix and make better? Fuel is present at all plugs.

Howdy, Sxpack.

Welcome to the Bulletin Board.

This is an Outboard Engine question, so I am gonna move it to the Outboards forum. Look for it over there.

Good luck. :)

sxpack ,
I am not real familiar with the Suzuki, but you might look here for some test procedures. They will apply to most outboards even though they may be for a Merc. or OMC product. Check Powerpack, Stator, Ect. and all wiring to be sure it's tight and hooked up correctly. Good luck,

web page

Can't help you with your no-start problem, but just had to butt in on one thing: Running rich wont burn a piston, but running lean sure will. Rich will dirty everything up with carbon, lean makes the combustion very, very hot. ;)

Hi,
Maybe You will find that an outboard manual for
your Suzuki will be helpful. For exampel Clymer
Suzuki outboard shop manual, 1977-1984 Suzuki
2-140 HP Outboard (about $29). Or a "Service
Manual" for your model (more expensive).
I have both for my Suzuki DT65 (1991) and it has
helped me with some troubles.
/Bo

Manuals do wonders, but the clymar(which I do have and use) will not repair the C. D. I. unit Part#32900-95520

You may well have damaged one of the pulse coils that are located under the flywheel. If I was you I would check power at the coils first and work your way back. The CDI unit is basically a computer, it needs an input to give an output. The input signal that tells the CDI unit to send power to the coils is given by the pulse coils. You will need to check the 3 pulse coil wires that go into the CDI for a signal. I am assuming you have checked but you may want to look at the timing as well. The timing IS adjustable on your Suzuki. Good luck!
