Hey, i just picked a "new" (84 or 94 i think) engine and had a few questions about it.
I'm amazed about how little info i was able to find online about this motor.
I contacted American suzuki and was told they discontinued the manual for this engine (although the rep couldnt confirm the year model). Was told the same thing by my local Suzuki dealer.
I've attached a few pics, hopefully they will show up.

Any one know what the butterfly bolt adjusts?

3_zpsdea55297.jpg

there are 4 screws on the side of this shaft.
one at the very bottom - to drain i assume
one about 6 inches above it - i assume this is the "full" level
one further up that says "flush" beside it - maybe for saltwater cleansing?
one above that it that says "oil"

To my knowledge i would fill it with gear oil using the very bottom hole and fill till it starts to come out of the next hole up. What throws me off the top bolt/hole that says "oil"? Any thoughts?

According to the limited info i found 0801 means it's an 8hp and 01 means it takes mixed fuel (if it was 02 that would mean oil injected)
The first # in the serial # is 4 indicating it is either an 84 or 94. Do you know which?

Googling and searching this forum shows the oil/gas ratio to be either 50/1 or 100/1. I will run 50/1 until i can confirm otherwise. Anyone know for sure?

Should i use standard gear oil? i think 80/90 w.

Also, there appears to be no way to have the motor "swing freely" except to adjust the pin where it forces it to stay just above the last setting (think high trim). I will have to run it this way as i am in shallow water and i need the prop to be able to kick back should it hit a stump/rock. Every other motor i've owned allowed this but this one appears not to.

thanks for any help!

Gaining traction..

i got a call back from a local dealer.. he stated it is a '84. I asked how he could tell and he said the first number is "4" and "01" doesnt exist in the serial number. I told him the model is 0801 and he said that didn't matter. I'm still not fully convinced it's not a '94.. it just doesnt look like its 30 years old!

he said to run 50:1 and use any 80/90w Gear oil. He said it will use 11.5oz.

I asked about the 4 bolts; he said not to mess with the "flush" bolt unless i am having issues with the water pump. He didn't seem to understand that it has an "oil" hole above the "flush" hole. i tried to explain it but no luck.. he just said pump from the bottom until oil comes out (yea, but which hole!).

he was the most helpful dealer i've spoke w/ so far.

It would help you a lot to locate at least an owners manual for that motor. Do you have a buddy or friend who's an experienced boater who could explain all the little details of operating and maintaining an outboard motor?...that would be helpful. Good Luck!

Manuals are discontinued. I called 3 Suzuki dealers and American Suzuki with no luck. I was able to locate parts diagrams online.

My main concern was the gear oil. It held 11.5 ozs. I filled from the bottom since that's the only way I know and no oil came out til it reached the top bolt hole labeled oil. A very Very slight amount leaked from the middle bolt. I have no idea why that hole is there. It's not a vent as it does not create a vacuum when I put thumb over it.

The guy said he hadn't ran it in 3 years but it started on the third pull last night!
