I recently bought a used boat with twin DT200 outboards and find it requires a lot of pressure to shift into reverse. So much so that I tend to overrev the engine when it finally engages. Is this normal for Suzuki shifters or can this be fixed. Thanks

Re: Suzuki DT200 shift problem

Mikem!

I have found in the past that if you are experincing shift problems it is usualy in the shift cable. Could be other things like control box, or even gears going out.
Cables will stretch or even get binded up. You can see if they are binding up, by removing the cables and shifting the cables at the shift lever if it is hard to shift then it is either in your shifting lever or in your cables. If it shifts easy then try shifting the lever (on the motor) that you removed the cable from and try shifting that way. Now when shifting in reverse by the lever on the motor you might have to turn the prop a little to get reverse to engage. If it is tight to shift in reverse on the motor then you have a problem within the entire unit (motor).

Nick
