i am looking for info on this engine concerning diconnectng shift linkage..ie removing lower unit. i ve heard that it is under carbs...any info appreciated.
i know that on the 87 it is under the carbs , there is a rbber plug on the cowling that alows acess for a socket its a pain to line pin back up when your done<br />be shure not to overlook the bolt under the cavitation plate near the trim tab
When you remove the rubber plug that Fish4970 described loosen as far as you can but don't remove the nut (its a pain to get back on). Then you can push the nut in enough to disengage the pin on the shift linkage. When you reinstall the lower unit have someone push in the nut to allow slack to line up the pin with the hole in the shift linkage. The shift rod that comes up from the lower unit just has a hole in the end of it. A pin on the end of a short arm connected to the shaft with the nut on the end slides horizontally into the hole in the shift rod and when the nut is tight it can't slide out.
