I'm looking at purchasing an early 90's, maybe '93 owner doesn't recall, Suzuki DT-40. I was wondering if these engines have any quirks to them, and if there is anything I should look out for. The engine was also reportedly de-tuned to 35hp to meet hp requirements on one of our popular salmon rivers, and I don't know who did the de-tune, and what was involved in that work.

The engine has sat for 2 years, so I plan to rebuild the carbs, fuel pump and water pump, replace the plugs and lower end oil, and generally go through the motor. My primary concern is that the bearings didn't rust while in storage.

TIA

DT 40's are indestructible. Do as you said and it should run forever. The detuning consisted of changing the throttle cam so it wouldn't open the carb all the way. Replace the cam and you have a 40hp.
