I have a 2001 Suzuki DF90 that starts well when cold, runs well, but when shut down to fish and then go for a restart, it grinds fro a while before it will start. It appears to "loose its prime". I can pump the bulb before tryignto start, but if I don't do that, it has to grind for a while before it fires up. It will run all day at any speed and never miss a lick, it just doesn't like to restart easily without priming the bulb. teh buld does prime up and get firm, so I didn't think it had an issue. Any ideas or guidance?

Re: Suzuki DF90 Starting Problem

Check the anti-siphon valve in the tank pickup (built in tank) and the check valves in the bulb. Sounds like fuel is migrating back to the tank or leaking somewhere on the engine.

Re: Suzuki DF90 Starting Problem

Thanks JB. Had not thought about that but it sure makes sense. I'm assuming that if the valve is bad the correct action is to replace the pickup assembly. Boat is a McKee Craft and the dealer is not too far away so parts can be had. Is there any easy way to "test" this or is it a "pull and look" deal? Thought is if I have to pull it anyway, maybe just replace it to be sure . . .

You could try running with a tote tank. If the problem is fixed then your options are narrowed down a little. Putting a new bulb on first might be easier. That original bulb would be about due for replacement anyway.

Good point . . . I'll try a bulb first. No obvious deterioration but it is the original and is 5 year old.

Thanks to all for the help.

DIfferent topic:

If anyone is looking at this that has experience with running synthetic oil in a Suzuki, I'd like to hear opinions and views. I've been running 10W-40 Castrol and change out every season (or sooner) but was thinking about going with a synthetic like Amsoil for extra protection at higher rpms . . .

Re: Suzuki DF90 Starting Problem

I used Mobil 1 in my DF70. Worked fine (but only after breakin).

Thanks for the input JB. I am definitely through the break-in period. I might just give the synthetic a try at the next oil change.

Thanks again!
