Hi All,
trying to help a friend with a strange water pump problem on his early 2000 Suzuki DF 50 outboard engine.

We were out last season and I noticed a very weak /none stream from the tell-tale. The stream was much better when we moving in the water. Got back to the dock and temp light would come on when idleing.

He had the impeller and stat changed and serviced at a local repair place last year.

We just put the ear muffs on with the hose and he does not get any water from the tell tale at all, temp light comes on after short time. Afriad to take it on the water so I am not sure if it is doing same thing as last season.

My question is, did anyone ever hear of no tell tale when idle but works when moving?

Also, when looking at diagrams, can anyone tell me what the "water pressure valve" does on this engine and could that be stuck closed or something?

I am trying to figure out the water path before the stat opens. Does the water just divert back to the exhuast before the stat opens?

I am not a pro mechanic but somewhat knowlegable about engines and just what to check what I can before pulling apart the block.

This weekend I intend on pulling the lower unit and the stat, try forcing water up the tube to see wher the blockage may be.

thanks to anyone with some advice to offer.

Water pressure valve may need cleaning or replacing. Some of these engine require removal to get at the valve. I would remove the thermostat, and gearcase. Connect a water hose with air adapter to the water tube, turn water on , give it a blast of about 60psi of air. Sometimes this will clear the valve.
