Hey Guys!
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Hopefully the video loads with appropriate audio. So this is my 2016 Suzuki df140 and I had my lower unit replaced after having some water intrusion and totally wrecking the old one. Mechanic pulled apart the used one I purchased to inspect everything and said it’s pretty flawless inside and prop shaft is straight. So he put it all back together and installed it on the motor and it’s making a noise that after multiple dissections cannot find the problem. Hoping that someone out there may have an idea or clue to what or where this sound is coming from

That’s quite a racket!….has your mechanic heard it for his thoughts? I guess the shims in the lower unit are dialed in correctly?…maybe your mechanic needs to double-check his assembly/shims…..sounds sorta like some gear noise to me…

Hey Robert! Yea, he actually brought the unit back to me today after disassembling it and putting it all back together. Put it back on and was the same noise just a hair less loud. He took it back with him and is going to pull the drive shaft and make sure it’s it’s perfectly straight. Other than that he’s at a loss. One thing I noticed when looking at the videos over and over, was that in the video with the noise, it appears the water coming out both side weeps( pardon my description as I don’t know all the technical terms) seems to be pulsing at the same rate as the noise? I could be imagining it but there it also not as much water cooking out the sides in the original. Any chance this could be an area of concern? Thanks again.

I don’t know how a water pump could make that much noise. Some motors have a drive shaft bushing about mid-way down the foot that requires some grease/lubrication, but that usually makes a chirping/sqealing sound. Yours sounds like gears…is the prop correct and on tight?

When he came back and put the lower back on we didn’t even put the prop back on. He even took that bushing you speak of out to eliminate that as a possibility.

I just don’t know then what’s making this noise, but it doesn’t sound right to me…hopefully one of our experienced experts on here will chime in with their thoughts….

if the only difference is the new lower unit, it has to be inside that

For sure it’s definitely something inside the lower unit. Was hoping the sound was common noise when a certain error or part of the process may have been skipped or left out. According to the mechanic there is absolutely zero damage or wear on anything inside. I can only stand to guess something isn’t lining up appropriately or there a small but very important part that hasn’t been put back in to make it all run smoothly ie shim or washer or something.
