I am about to purchase my first new boat and need advice regarding the outboard. I am getting a 18' custom aluminum CC jon pushing 800lbs+ dry. I have decided on the Suzuki 4s line based on price and EFI. The DF60/70 have timing belts versus the DF90/115 which have timing chains.

1.) Do the chains require less maintenance? A buddy told me belts must be checked/changed once a year by dealer.

2.) Is the DF90 more fuel efficient than the DF115 since they have the same block? The tests posted on Suzuki website were not very helpful.

This boat will be used to hunt and fish so I am not considering a 2strk or carbed O/B which I have found to be quite cold-blooded when duck hunting.

Thanks,
FurDuksNFish

Howdy, fur. . ..

The DF60/70 timing belt is recommended for replacement at 400 hours. Tension MUST be adjusted exactly as instructed in the manual. I know of no belt failures.

The twin cam Suzis use chains, which are a bit noisier but require less maintenance. Tension is adjusted automatically. Replacement is much more expensive than the belt.

The DF90 will not be any more economical than the DF115 at the same speed with the same boat.

I love my DF70, and see no reason to buy a DF60 or DF90 over the DF70 or DF115.

Good luck. :)

Re: Suzuki DF timing belts or chains

Appreciate the help guys.

Since there's not that great of a difference in cost I will splurge on the F115. Figure I can haul quite a load with taht compared to the lower models.

Take care
