Suzuki 85hp - hard starting and engine noise

1982 DT85 - Even with a brand new battery seems to hit a tough spot when trying to start, as if the battery were dead, when you take plugs out it cranks right over but when there is compression it seems like there is too much? Is this possible? Once running it ran fine, then after about 30 minutes of running it started making a "clacking" noise, not like a rod knock, it was a "clack clack" that increase with the engine RPM, water pump works fine, has oil injection and I also had oil mixed with the gas to be safe as I am not sure how well the injection works, Is this a reed valve making these noises? The noise would sort of go away then come back.. Any help would be great, thanks

If I would geuss from your information, but remember i'm just geussing and might be totally wrong, your piston rings are busy going ....

What else could possibly making that sort of noise? If it were a piston ring issue that could explain why it has a difficult time turning over at a certain point?

I took plugs out and spun the motor over by hand, place my finger over plug holes just to get idea of any compression or not, the 3rd cylinder had almost no compression.. I guess that is that huh?

yep, broken rings on your 3rd cylinder .... good luck reparing that, it's not a fun job ...

I have another motor to throw on the boat, BUT is not going to be nearly as fun.. 14ft tri hull - currently 85hp - going to have to throw on my 35hp so I can at least get out for now... I just hope that it gets up to plane.. Thanks for the input "theDeeJayCee"

A 35hp should push it out on plain but not as good (obviously) as your 85hp .... good luck
