Please could someone lend some advice. Have a 85hp Suzuki which has never given problems however has been standing for about 4 years. Cleaned all carbs out, checked bulb, fuel pump and tank valves. It has no power from 1/4 throttle, and dies if you increase throttle.

Put the choke on and this helps a bit which tells me it is not getting fuel. I have not played with mixture setting and altitude difference could not effect to such extent.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Hello.
do you have a way to test ignition timing? if the throttle valve switch was not reconnected or is out of adjustment the ign timing wont advance.
Good luck and keep posting]

What year? Earlier Suzukis had mechanical advance, later had electronic. When you cleaned the carbs, exactly what was your procedure, be specific? Short of Rodbolts suggestion for the electronic advance fix, you are describing the symptoms of clogged main jets in your carbs which is consistent with the history of sitting unused for 4 years.

thanks for responses.

it is an old engine, guessing '84 and has mechanical advance to my knowledge. In terms of the carbs, I stripped all three completely all jets out etc. what about reed valves - haven't checked these?

Check the fuel pump diaphragms, they may be leaking and are easy and inexpensive to replace. Oh, if you get this thing running you need to replace the water pump impeller if its been sitting for 4 years, they have a shelf life and also will take a set when sitting that long.
