 I have just brought a suzuki 85 outboard motor and after a weeks gentle treatment the motor started and after 50 yards on the water the engine totally seezed up. Then after a few days of rest the engine freed up but we did not start it after manually unseezing it because i am afraid of starting the engine and messing it up or blowing it up. any suggestions? part ex? sell as seen? or even rebuild? pls reply asap thanks

Re: suzuki 85 outboard motor

Most Suzukis are gravity fed oil motors. There's a tank above the engine which you fill from a trap in the cowling. If there's an air bubble in the oil line running to the engine, the sensors will shut the motor down cold becasue no oil is detected. If you rock the engine with the PT & T, this might help. I'd wouldn't recommend disconnecting the sensors. They're good motors, don't get spooked. This happened a few times with my DT115. Solution, fill the oil slowly. I hope that's all it is.

ok, thanx but our motor takes in the fuel with the gas, (the oil is mixed with the fuel in the gas tanks) will this make any difference? ;)

Re: suzuki 85 outboard motor

UPDATE We have called an engineer out to look at our engine. He gave it a quick looking over and when taking the 3 spark plugs out he found that there is no compression in the bottom piston. He also said that he can see that the engine has already been rebuilt for some reason. He is going to arrange an engine strip to find out what the problem with the compression is. Can you possibly tell me what the lack of compression is likely to be and the cost of replacement parts? Thanks

Also if anyone knows anything about engines, could they tell me whether all three of the carburetor butterflies should be in the same position? i.e All open or All shut, as we have found that they are all in different positions! Thank you

Hey Dog, Sorry to hear about your problems. The "no compression" in #3 could be caused by several things....none of them good! :( Could be a hole in the piston caused by pre-ignition, broken rings, etc. Your butterflys should be exactly synchronized (could in fact be the root cause of all your problems). Let us know what you find when you tear it down. Best of luck. :)
Backlash
