Details: 1992 Suzuki 40hp, elec. start, ser. #
3351536, Has 580 hours on engine. When I turn the key to start, nothing happens. If I push the key
in, the choke works. If I leave the key in the on
position, I can start it with the pull rope easily. It runs fine. I have replaced the plus 4yr
old starting battery, checked the 20 amp fuse, sort of tried to hot wire the ignition key (I would not make a good thief), and played with the
neutral position on the throttle lever. If I short
the starter relay with a screw driver, the starter
works fine. The emergency shut off tab is in place on the control box, and the oil reservoir is full. I have the shop service manual. The manual shows a "neutral switch" in the electrical
diagram, and in this motor, the switch appears to be intragal to the starter relay, and activates if I jumper it with 12 volts, but still the key will not activate the starter. Now, what???? Thanks in advance for any ideas. I haven't used this forum before, so please also send a copy of the reply to my e-mail. eglenn@ncwebsurfer.com
By the way, I also have a 8hp Suzuki on my little 16 foot C-Dory. Both motors have been run hard and long - over ten years - and have been relavively trouble free.
