Suzuki 4 Stroke (DF140) Burning Oil

I recently purchased a suzuki 140 hp 4 stroke outboard for my 23' center console (aluminum). I followed the recommnended break in procedure. I have about 60 hours on it now. After the first oil change and Lower unit replacement (had a random run in with a rock that wasn't marked, at idle speed which sheared the shaft at about 20 hours)I noticed the engine was burning oil. about 1/4 of quart per 50-60 gallons. I have been running her hard with a full load of gas, baitwell, etc. I also notice smoking after slowing down from cruising to idle speed. Being my first 4 stroke, I'm not familar with the behavior of them and was wondering if this was normal, unusual, or signs of things to come. Thank you.

I doubt this is normal...at least I hope not as I just purchased a 140hp Johnson/Suzuki 4-stroke. It only has about 3 hours on it, and I too have meticulously followed the break-in directions.<br /><br />So far the motor is quiet, smooth and runs very clean. I checked the oil, and in 3 hours and probably 50-75 miles on it, the oil level is full, exactly where it was when I started. <br /><br />The biggest problem I have had to date is starting the thing when it is already running - it's so quiet that the only noticeable noise at idle is the water hitting the lake from the pee-hole.<br /><br />Good luck with your Suzuki - I'd have the dealer check out your problem as I am sure it is still on warranty.

I've run into the problem a couple of times with the 115 and they just were not running hot enough. Replacing the thermostat with the optional hotter one solved the problem. This may very well be your case as I would assume the water in Mass. is not very warm. Give it a shot as a first step and if it doesn't cure it perhaps you're just real unlucky and have a bad oil ring or valve seal. Thats what your dealer and warranty are for.
