A friend is looking to sell his boat with a 1998 Suzuki 140hp engine. I don't know how many hours on it.

Anything I should be aware of/look for when I have the engine inspected and tested?
Have your friend replace the water pump impeller if it hasn't been done in two years. If corodded, the bolts may not come out with all heads attached (and you want it to happen to him, not you).
The water pump kit is about $35-$40 available from Browns Point Marine via the internet and shouldn't take over an hour or two of time but that assumes no broken bolts. If any bolt breaks, then the time to fix that issue will more than likely cost more than the impeller kit and labor to replace it.
Thanks Steamboat. The boat that comes with the motor is (like you have) an Angler but it is an 18 1/2 foot center console with a t-top (added two years ago). I don't have the model number. It is the second owner and has been dry stored until this summer when it was bottom painted and kept in salt water. the also added hydraulic steering this summer and a new gas gauge/float.

Any specific items I should look at when inspecting the boat?
My boat has done well for me but still is a lightly used boat (140hrs so far). The only issues I can think of are cosmetic since Angler seems to have had a thin gelcoat for some years. Look at the hull sides for small issues by sighting down the sides at a sharp angle and you should see any inperfections. The motor runs well and I get about 3 mpg at cruise with the 150 HP (about 25 mph). Top speed is in the low 40 mph range but thats with 80 gallons of fuel and a bigger boat. Best of luck on your purchase. Only down side to Suzuki engnes is the lack of dealers so look for Browns Point marine in NJ for parts and advice - their friendly, ship quickly and the prices seem fair.
