I have an "oldish" 140HP Suzuki with no model number or serial number on it. It is a 2 stroke, inline 4 cylinder with 4 carbs and oil injection system. I don't have any manuals and don't know how to obtain any.
I find difficulty in starting from cold. The engine runs well and starts first time when it is warmed up. I use the choke, but no throttle - is this correct?
Can someone help with the identification?

Re: Suzuki 140HP Starting problems

Colinh,
I have an '85 Suzuki DT115. I find it easiest to start by doing the following:

1. Pump bulb up very firm.
2. Open throttle up just a little past iddle speed.
3. Be sure batteries are fully charged.(I have a two battery setup. I always start cold with both batteries turned on.)
4. Turn key with choke engaged.

Sometimes, it takes two or three key turns with started turning for about 5-8 seconds each. Every so often, after a try or two, it takes another firming up of the bulb. You may want to give it a try and see if this sequence helps. Also, the fresher your plugs, the easier it should be to start.

Knightgang

colinh,

I second knightgangs procedure. I too had a 1995 DT-140. I had a single battery set up though.

Be careful with the throtte. Just crack it open with the warm up lever.

Re: Suzuki 140HP Starting problems

Colinh,

Me again. My procedure works pretty good, or has until recently. I had some skipping problems on my trip out over the weekend. It turns out that I will need to rebuild my carbs. Thinking back, anytime I have had major starting problems like you describe, I have had some hick-up that seemed now to be a lead up to my carb rebuild. You may want to look into doing a rebuild on your carbs, if you don't know how long it has been since they were last done.
Good luck and post any sucess.
