Suzuk DT40C won't start

Hi, I am new to boating and outboards but learning very fast.

I have bought an old Suzuki DT40C circa 1985 outboard. I looks in very good condition. It sat for a while as I didn't have the correct fuel socket. I started it for the first time the other day and it ran OK for about a minutes before I stopped it as I suddenly remembered it was out of water. I connected flush muff and started it again without problem but it didn't seem to have a nice flow of water so I stopped it again. ( I now realise that I was looking in the wrong place for the telltale and it probably did have a nice flow of water but didn't realise it)

The next day I put it in a bucket and tried to start it. It just would not start and then I think I flooded by squeezing the bulb too much. I have taken the spark plugs out, baked them with a heat gun and tested them on the head bolt whilst trying to start the engine and both plugs give a spark. I have also let the chambers air to dry off the fuel.

I have bought some easy start and squirted in the carb. It starts for about 1 second and then dies. It does this each time so I presume it burns off the easy start and that is it. I presume its a fuel problem so what do people suggest. Carb clean? BTW, its an oil injected model and I am using a fuel ratio of 50:1!

Any help would be much appreciated.

pumping primer bulb should not flood motor unless the needles and seats are not closing off properly.
Check to make sure fuel pump does not have hole in diaphragm and clean carbs would be 1st things

Thanks, however think I have worked it ouot, feel a bit stupid really but as stated I am now to this lark. I have been mixing 2 stroke oil in the external fuel tank. I don't think I need to as its an oil injected model. The oil goes in the tank in the engine and it mixes it for you. DOH!

Will have to flush it out and try again.

Re: Suzuk DT40C won't start

Ahhhhh, still having problems. I have got some fresh fuel, disconnected the carb and flushed some fuel using the bulb on the line through the filter and pump and still it won't start. Have checked I have sparks and I do. It fires up briefly when I use easy start but then dies again just as quick.

Anyone please got any suggestions!!!

If you have good compression ,spark, and timing, then you are left with fuel problem.
like I said check fuel pump and then clean carbs

Carb taken off and cleaned, fuel filter taken off and cleaned and now have a running engine. Thanks you for your help. Next questions though, where exactly on a DT40 is the tell tale? I am not seeing any water peeing out from anywhere and suggestions I have read have been to clean the exit hole but I don't know exactly where it is. There is a hole at the top of the leg but it appears that just exhaust comes out of this one. Is there anywhere else. Thanks.

Re: Suzuk DT40C won't start

Right, discovered where the tell tale holes are by forcing water through using muffs. Must have been a blockage, however only comes out when I actually hold the muffs on tight. Doesn't seem to come out otherwise.

However another problem now :-(

The engine runs for about 30 seconds, then starts to rev sporadically, the oil light comes on then it stalls! I thought it might be starved of fuel so pumped the bulb in the fuel line til it felt harder, started the engine again but same problem, revs high, oil light comes on then stalls. Anyone got any ideas.

PS, plenty of oil in the tank.

Re: Suzuk DT40C won't start

Just for an update, I have removed the fuel filter and cleaned it and engine starts and runs beautifully. I turned up the water pressure on the muffs and now waters comes out of all the holes and engine does not stall or anything.

I think my problem was air in the fuel line, dirty filter, pump and carb and insufficient water flow to the inlet. All these made the engine behave erratically. Put it in a dustbin of water and water flowed around and out of all the tell tales superbly. Shouldn't have put it in gear though, destroyed the dustbin in one fail swoop!!!!!

Re: Suzuk DT40C won't start

In the future do NOT use "Easy Start" or any other starting fluid (ether) on a two-stroke engine. There is no OIL in the fluid and it washes the cylinders. With no lube you can score the cylinders. Next, when using muffs remember that your city water pressure is forcing water through the engine so that is not a valid test of the cooling system. The engine needs to be in the water to verify the impeller is working.

Re: Suzuk DT40C won't start

Thanks for that Silvertip. I didn't think of that. Now that I have cleaned out all the fuel systems, it starts really easily anyway so shouldn't need to use it again. As for the water flow, I did submerge the leg in a dustbin of water and ran it, it was pumping out of everywhere as it should. I was only using the muffs as the bin was quite small and it didn't fit very well, as demonstrated by the video!
