Surprise - no generator!?!?!?

As I eagerly scanned through my new Seloc Manual covering my 28HP Evinrude from 1962-1964 I discovered that my electric starter equipped motor was supposed to also have a generator - which it definitely doesn't. I had been wondering how the battery was supposed to be recharged and figured it must get recharged somehow by the magneto, but no, it appears that this motor doesn't have a charging system. Now the question is, was that an option or (strong suspicion) did some previous owner in the past simply remove it for some reason? Now what do I do to keep my battery recharged for lights and starter? Has anyone rigged a car alternator to do the job? I don't think one would fit under the engine cover.

You'll have to charge the battery using an external charger. But a good battery should keep you going a while between charges (and there's always that handy pull rope . . .
