I have a 1988 Four Winns Sundowner 215 Cuddy Cabin with a 5.0 305 hp and a OMC outdrive. I haven't used the boat in a few years but this summer I decided to find the time to use it. Been out a few times and the same problem keeps occurring. The boat is surging/skipping while running it. Idles fine. This is what I have done thus far as I am trying to trouble shoot.

Changed Cap,rotor, plug wires, Condenser, points, fuel filter, fuel tank check valve. Rebuilt the carb and had it ultrasound cleaned. Did a compression test. All cylinders are good but one cylinder is low however I don't think thats the surge issue. It runs in idle up to 4000 rpm's and doesn't seem to skip. Stalls out at time when running and usually starts around 2000 rpms. I am going to check the mechanical fuel pump. The boat has been timed also with the adjustments. It's currently at the marina but they aren't sure either so I figured I would see if anyone else has ran into issues like this so I can stop spending money. Please Help and ask questions and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge. thanks Shane

Mornin, man, it's looks like you got all the basics covered, don't that drive ya nuts, i still wanta lean towards fuel, was it doing this before and after the tune-up? any changes in running? it seems like with all ya did that something should be better, lol, carbs can be some tricky devils, if ya had a carb you could borrow, maybe with an elec fuel pump, best way i know of answering the fuel issue, i truly wish you luck, stay strong, and remember, that that dosen't kill us.............you know.....really pisses us off...............Mark

Well I would add this, even though you have changed all the right things even with fresh gas, you could still have the problems. Run a gas line from a different gas tank to the pump. Take boat out and if no change even though you have changed out all the posted parts I would be meticulous starting with spark, plug gap, timing, condensor the whole nine yards. Even if you have to tear carb down again if you havent found the issue by then. Just my 2 cents but I bet you will figure it out

It was doing this before the tune up. This is why I did all that other stuff. Yes the RPM's are running higher than I could get them running before. We plan on testing the fuel pump today. thanks
