96 fast strike 150 J150GLEDB Out on the lake today and in between fishn holes i was cruzing at wot when it felt like someone deployed a parachute behind my boat just for a second. It did it a few times then as I slowed down the engine sputtered then died and wouldnt start so I pumped the bulb and It started right up. I ran it somemore and it would surge now and then.. I didnt really notice a huge drop in rpms at WOT. Carbs were rebuilt 2 years ago. Also my carbs are wet and It does have a gassy smell when I remove the air cover is this normal. the bottom of the cowling under the carbs is very oily. thanks

Sounds like you might rebuild again. If you pumped the bulb and it cleared it then it has to be fuel problem. Could be an air leak or junk in the jets. Not familiar with your big engine but this should get you bumped back to the top.

The first thing to do is to identify where the gassy smell and oil is coming from. Chances are thats your problem. What about the fuel pump, did you check it?

Re: surging 150 at full throttle

all my carbs are wet on the outside and the bottom carbs where the gas and oil from the top ones drip down actually have drops hanging from the edges and screws. I mean it is dripping down on the motor mount and everywhere but they are all very very oily . I also checked the fuel filter and the brown rubber gasket has a bad side to it and that might be where the gas is comming from. How do I check the fuel pump? Thanks fire and basscat

If you have gas leaking from your carbs, then it may be time to rebuild them again. I have read on here where there has been problems with warped fuel bowls on certain carbs, but I am not sure if it was your engine or not. Anyhow, I would only use OMC carb kits during a rebuild.<br />As far as the fuel pump, disconnect the fuel line coming out fuel pump and turn over the engine.
