Surge coupler replace vs fix

Should I replace my whole surge coupler or just the master cylinder within the coupler? Is there another way to fix my problem?

Background:

I recently replaced my axles, drums and breaks on my dual axle trailer. I also put in brand new break lines. I did not replace the surge coupler or its components.

On the way home the other day the breaks locked up. I cracked the break line and found it to be under pressure. That released the breaks.

So, it seems the master cylinder piston go stuck applied and releasing the pressure via the break line allowed it to release.

Ralph, did you happen to notice if the coupler was still compressed, because it is possible for it to jam if the little 'shock' attached underneath to the coupler and master is worn out. it will allow the coupler to travel to far and jam....but for the cost of an actuator about $110 for a series 60 (6000#) I would replace the whole unit, since everything else new.

on the subject of surge brakes locking up. I installed a toggle switch in the truck to power the release solenoid. Made me feel better to have the capability to disengage the brakes at anytime. Just an idea.

NE, I pulled the truck forawrd to make sure the coupler was fully extended but the breaks were still applied. It wsn't until I cracked the break line and let some pressure out that the breaks released. I read on Champion's web site that some cast iron master cylinders can rust causing the master cylinder to stick on. I think that is what happened to me.

woundup - I don't think I have a soliniod. It's the kind where you need to extend the coupler and stick a pin in it to dissengage the break. Did you modify yours? What kind do you have?

I didn't modify it, it came with a release solenoid built on to the coupler. It usually connects to your reverse lights to disengage the brakes for backing. I thought they were all the same. My trailer is a alum. trailer made by performance trailers.

Any idea who makes that coupler? That is the kind I'd like to buy but I haven't seen them out there.

BTW, everytime I see FWB I think about almost crashing on a twin engine out of Eglin during one of those nasty thunder storms you all get.
