Let me start off by saying that I am involved with several groups in and around Detroit that deal with the state of the city(fwiw all non-profit, completely volunteer ran). Mainly the architectural preservation but in general trying to put Detroit into a different perspective for people who have either never visited or haven't in a number of years(always amazes me how many locals haven't been in the city proper in years). So my question is how do you think Detroit came off during the largest sporting event in the US and what was the media reaction of the city like in your area?

Sincere thanks for any and all replys.

I thought the city looked good.......I've been there a few times. Never saw a game there though, only went to the Silverdome ;) .

Detroit essentially is the same as Milwaukee

All we seemed to hear here was that Detroit was transformed into Pittsburgh. When your question made me stop and think about Detroit, I would say the city missed a marketing opportunity.

I didn't think about Detroit once. Other than a minor footnote, the city wasn't even mentioned

Thanks guys.
Pony, sorry about your luck with the dome. That was one of the worst venues I've ever been to, dull and lifeless in its best moments. No history and poor teams, minus a few select players, made it hard to be a Lions fan.

Aspeck, I also think they missed some major opportunities to market the city. But hopefully the lack of negative news, at least by the responses so far, will help to rid the city of the negative stereotypes that have plagued it fot years. As for Detroit being transformed into Pittsburgh I think that had to do more with the number of people who came to town for the game, mostly Steeler fans. On a side note, if the people that were here are any indication of the general populace of the Pitt area I may have to take the ride over for a visit.

Anytime you're coming to the D let me know will share a pop or two, or if my boat ever gets done perhaps we'll wet a line. Thanks again.

Re: Superbowl opinions on Detroit

Dale, My family used to own a small Pontiac and Oldsmobile dealership, so there were several trips to the Detroit area 20+ years ago. Haven't been back there for quite a few years now, but I have some friends from that area and they tell me how nice the city is. I see that Bassmaster has Detroit listed as one of the top 10 bass fishing cities (240,000 or more population) in the US. It would be a pleasure to wet a line and drink a diet coke with you some day.

Oh yea, and I live about 120 miles outside of the 'Burgh, but it has become a very nice place to visit (and fish).
