Re: super loud buzzing noise as i turn the key
Yes, that buzzer is the overheat alarm. Yes joe, overheating can be caused by lack of oil. Also, it can be caused by lack of cooling water. Unlike a water cooled car engine, that has a radiator to keep cooling the same water, an outboard uses water from the lake to cool the powerhead. It then spits it out, and picks up new water. Very practical, seeing as outboards are only gonna get used in water.
With yalls motors buzzing, it means either; there isn't enough oil, or there isn't enough water cooling it. Those are the main two reasons. As for not enough oil, joe, what year is your motor? After 1964, they were 50:1 ratio. You better be measuring it, and not just pouring some in after filling the gas. Or, if it is from lack of cooling water, it means that the water pump is not pumping correctly. If that is the case, it is usually a bad impeller that won't get a good suction of water to the engine. The impeller is a rubber piece that makes a seal, and that pushes the water. They desinigrate over time, and once it stops making a good seal, it stops giving the outboard enough water. These need to be replaced every year or 2.
Or, your whole water pump could be dead. Joe, how long have you been running with the buzzer on? You may have greatly shortened the life of your good outboard. Mike, did the buzzer start when turning the key with the engine cold (been sitting for a day or so) or with it warm (ran within the last hour or so) If cold, it could mean your buzzer is goofy, but if hot, it may mean that the engine was overheating. The reason I ask is, it shouldn't be instantanious, as the cold outboard is gonna need to run for at least half a minute for the lack of water allow it to heat up. And, if lack of oil, it will take a few revolutions for it to have enough friction to heat it.
