The wife wanted to get me up=scale SG's but didn't have a clue was to which to pick.

Althought I use SG's they are usually the $15 ones that some pro endorses.

I/ve spent three days arguing with myself about:
Color, Tint, Mirror, Glass. Plastic, 580, 400, and the list goes on

The < $90 ones tout the same benefits as the > $150 ones.!

Noticed that the outfitters off the same brands and models, but don't carry all of the same tint/lens options.

Wish there was a one of those database programs were you filled in the blanks and an answer pops out!

Do you all mull over these as much as I have?

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I would get a pair that are polarized... they cut down on the glare quite a bit. other than that, just find a pair that you like... i am a fan of oakley but they do get a bit pricey tho.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I prefer Oakley Polarized Lens' but this last pair I bought were UnderArmor Polarized and they work almost as well. But I will be getting a new Pair of Oakleys soon.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

The best sunglasses are Costa Del Mar, they are all day comfortable and built really well, i hav ehad 2 pairs now and don't think I will ever get anything else.

I have tried cheaper polorized glasses and they just aren't the same, mine were $180 but I got them on Ebay for @$60, if you put your time in you cna get them for a real good price.

I haveseen these threads before adn I think you will see alot of people use Costas, also you don't tend to lose $200 glasses like you woudl a $20 pair of Foster Grants, the rule is "On your face or in the case"

I personally just buy two cheap pair, as I go through them about every six months. The last time I paid significant $ on a pair, I broke them in 20 minutes.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

Mostly I buy polarized safety sunglasses at home depot. They look pretty decent, cost $20-$30 and are pretty hard to break. I tend to forget to remove my shades before getting up on the ski, so I loose a couple pairs a year ;)

Only other set I have is some Optic Nerve glasses that I got a deal on at a ski racing event a couple months ago. Nice set but I really don't notice any difference in the lens quality.

My boat glasses (cheap polarized, usually from the fishing section) have a floating strap on them. Use them on the ski, if they get too much spray pull them down and wear them around your neck. If they fall off, go find them!

Re: Sunglasses Selection

If one values his eyesight, do not buy junk disposable sunglasses. Do the research on what curved distorted plastic and "blue tint" does to your eyesight over time! Treat your vision with the purchase of sunglasses the same way you would if buying prescription lenses. I have been wearing Serengeti photochromic/spectral filtered/polarized eye wear for over 20 years and will never buy another product. The glass/lens technology was originally engineered and produced by Corning Optics and were the very best available in my opinion until the brand was acquired by Bushnell. Still an amazing visual experience to wear these fine glasses, but they will never be the same quality as they were in the 80's and 90's. If you can afford to own and operate a boat, you can afford a $100 pair of shades.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I recently got news glasses after cataract surgery in both eyes.

My wicked ( :) ) stepmother was an Optometrist who was very specific about sunglasses: Optically neutral unless prescription, glass or polycarbonate, gray, polarized, bifocal if you wear bifocals indoors. Her preferred brand was Ray Ban, though I think she would also like more modern brands like Oakley, Maui Jim, etc.

Got prescription bifocal gray Ray Bans. Had bifocal prescription no-name brand from Walmart before. No contest. Small (secondary nickname for wicked stepmom) was right on.

Aging really raises one's concern for eyesight care and comfort. Not a place to compromise.

Just a note on that, but I don't think there are any blue tinted polarized sunglasses out anymore... The cheap ones that look blue are not. They are blue blockers, in other words, the world appears a little yellow in them. They are blue dichroic, which means instead of absorbing blue (and appearing yellow), they reflect blue and pass everything else. (which of course gives a blue appearance.)

I also usually head over to the fishing isle in walmart and grab a pair of heavily polarized glasses for boating. Go through a couple pair a season. Every single one I've bought in that isle are either neutral or very slightly tinted yellow.

With the above in mind, not all glasses that advertise polarized truly are... Easy way to tell. Get two identical pair, put one on, and then hold the second one between your eyeball and a ceiling light. Now turn the second pair 90 degrees. It should get dark, very dark. The better the polarization, the darker it gets. If it doesn't change, they aren't polarized.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I wear dark prescription photograys, they're sunglasses when I need then and regular glasses when I don't.

It works for me.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I wear prescription glasses all the time, so I just use the old pair with the polarized clip that comes with them.

As most of mine end up on the bottom of the river within a month or two I try to go with inexpensive, but polarized.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

Oakley polarized is the only way to go! Ive had a pair for over 3 yrs now. I even ran over them with a 2 ton truck and not anything broke, the lenses bent double. I ordered a new set for lenses ,snaped them in and still wearing them. Also you can see into the water almost magically with the polarized, eliminates the glare almost 100%

Re: Sunglasses Selection

I have two pair of cheap-o's both from the fishing section at wally world. One has the blue that was talked about earlier the other pair has a red ish tint to them. The blue ones are for fishing and the red ones are for driving. One thing that you will notice is that if you look at a back glass of a car with polarized you will see little squares in the glass.

Re: Sunglasses Selection

My gf works in the eye field, and her office carries the maui jim brand...I was on the el cheapo glasses for years, and she talked me into a new pair so naturally I check out maui jim...I will never go back to el cheapo again..I have a rather big head so finding glasses that didnt leave lines or marks on the side of my head had always been tough, but these fit more comfortable then even my prescription glasses that I wore at all times...They make a huge difference... Before I met her I would never have even considered paying $100-200 for a pair of sunglasses, now I refuse to wear anything else...I think the biggest 3 have been named in oakley, maui jim, and ray ban...Just find one that fits you best.
