Just out shopping, looked at some Costa Del MAr's, nice glasses, but very pricey. Any comments on these glasses, good or bad for the money ?? Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative for a decent pair of polarized fishin' glasses ????? Thanks for any help or guidance

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

I have a buddy that has some. He doesn't catch any more fish because of them. I wear the 10 dollar Wal-Mart special. If I loose them, oh well!!!!!<br /><br />Kinda like wearing a suit and tie when fishing. If it helps you catch fish go for it!

troyo,<br /><br />You're right the Costa's are $$$$ mucho dinero.<br /><br />I have a pair of Maui Jim's and Polarized Ray Ban's. I actually prefer the Ban's even though they were half the price

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

I have owned a pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses for 7 or 8 years (I don't loose sunglasses) They are by far the best glasses I've ever owned!!! I can see fish in all types of water that my buddy can't.<br /><br />Before I got them I always made fun of anyone that spent more than 12 bucks on sunglasses.<br /><br />The first thing that drew me to them was they were darker than most and I need a dark lens (sensitive eyes) but they do not limit your ability to see deep in any water!!! I can't tell you how many times I've said to guys in the boat "Look at that" They say "what" "That...”<br /><br />I can't say enough for them and I am a real nickel noser (penny pincher). When I need a new pair when mine are 10 years old I will get another pair of Costa Del Mar.<br /><br />If you spent a lot of money on your regular glasses (100., 150., or so) you take care to not loose them. Well these are high-end specs and you got to take care of them.<br /><br />If I pro-rated mine over all the years they were pretty darn cheap compared to 12$ specs that lighten, fade and scratch and need replacing after a year.<br /><br />They are very scratch resistant and they don't lighten, at least mine haven't after 8 years.<br /><br />Just one mans opinion “I like um” <br /><br /><br />

Ok... I'm a sunglass nut. I have had Oakleys, Costa, and Ray Bans. The BEST are Maui Jim. I've had a pair for over 10 years and that was before they came out with the spring hinges. If you haven't looked at these glasses, take the time to do so. They have a great website. And believe me... if you spend $150 or so on sunglasses, you won't loose them. Buy youself a good pair of keepers for them. Cats are phat. Mine hang from the rear view mirror when not in use. Keeps their shape better that way. Good Luck...

I agree with Ziggy. Maui Jim's are the best sunglasses I've ever owned. Bought them in Florida probably 8 yrs ago or more (don't remember exactly). Used them fishing in Florida sun, and they are excellent for glare on the water. Use them flyfishing in MD for trout, and I can spot them fairly far off. They were expensive, around $150, but worth every penny. Look good too.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

I do love my Costa's as I said but if you guys that have owned both Costa & Maui and prefer the Maui I think I have to look at them when I'm ready to buy.<br /><br />It would be hard to give up those trusty Costa Del Mar's but heck if there's a better mouse trap... I would like to have DJ's choices but I don't think the wife would go for 500 bills on sun-specs.<br /><br />Even though it wasn't my post thanks for the info guys!!!

Howdy, Y'all. ( Or is it Heidi, Yawl?)<br /><br />My beloved step-mom was an Opthamologist. She did not waffle on eye protection advice.<br /><br />First: lenses must be optically perfect or prescription. Glass or polycarbonate only.<br /><br />Second: lenses must be polarized.<br /><br />Third: Lenses must block 100% of UVA and UVB.<br /><br />Fourth: If the visible spectrum is addressed they should block the blue end of the spectrum.<br /><br />Fifth: Peripheral protection required.<br /><br />Though she didn't approve of silvered lenses, she didn't explain why (It took about an hour to get the full lecture on the above).<br /><br />The only brand she endorsed were Ray Ban <br /><br />She required me and my family to get all of our shades from an optometrist. Cool shades a lot cheaper than the "style" boutiques.<br /><br />Lenses varied from Amber through brown to green. <br /><br />I still follow her advice, with excellent results at reasonable prices.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB :)

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

When I first started wearing sunglasses I tried the cheapos. Very soon after I was wearing them I would develop headaches. I now follow J.B.’s step mom’s recommendations when looking for new sunglasses. I used RayBan’s for years and would easily get 4-5 years use of them bringing the prorated price as Capt_U stated down real low. For years I wanted a pair of Maui Jim’s but always shied away because of the price. Well last year I finally broke down, bit the bullet and shelled out the coin. $290.00 CDN. They are much better made than the RayBan’s. I look after my sunglasses and expect to have the Maui’s for many years. Highly recommended.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

very informative stuff! kudos on all of it. i've just recently gone way of needing prescrptn glasses and had my old pair changed over to shaded/polarized (pkg deal). previously, i was a $6 sunglasses man. it does make a diff in getting headaches- for me anyway. and its amazing how $$$ tends to help one avoid losing/breaking something :D <br />Now, i'd like to know- concerning JB's post on peripheral cover - which of the high$$ brands offer this feature?

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

hello again. i was looking at rayban & maui jim, and the polarized grey tinted ones i ckd out were only offered in mineral(glass). since i lose sunglasses so often, i've tried a zillion cheapo's, and i finally got a pair i looooove. then my daughter and i were goofing around and the frame was broken top/bottom on left lens. so now i guess i'll hafta shipem to crab to do the super carbonfiber fix, or get new 'real' sunglasses. the old 'scrip' frames i had tinted are not doing justice since they don't keep the sun out on all angles...<br />so now that we have diff folks, anyone got good info on the good choices, in keeping with JB's 5 rules to go by??? <br />the true glass ones seem to irritate me from the weight diff. poly should be the ticket, but maybe i just haven't tried the right ones. the mauijim 'daddyO's' look like my style. any thoughts?<br />here's some links:<br /> http://www.the-eye-shop.com/gb/mauijim.asp <br /> http://www.the-eye-shop.com/gb/rayban.htm

As I mentioned before I am fortunate to have a pair of Maui's and Ban's. I prefer the Ban's for driving because they are as JB said-"optically perfect" . It makes a difference in depth perception, important while driving.<br /><br />I prefer the Maui's for on the water. I can see into the water farther.<br /><br />You can buy Ray Ban's at Wal Mart-about half the price of anywhere else.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

are both of those glass instead of polycarbonate? if so, do they seem heavy and slip down your nose when you're sweating? heck, thats my biggest problem, but you probably don't sweat since you've been in cactus country for awhile :p <br />its snoozetime here, i'll ck back with this tomorrow.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to shell out the money but I am hell on glasses prescription or otherwise. I went to contacts so as not to lose, scratch or otherwise mangle or destroy prescription glasses. I stick with cheapos because of one reason even if I pay the big bucks they last the same as the cheapos. I for one destroy glasses. If anyone knows of a pratically indestructable pair let me know. Loss is not usually the problem but when you fish Jungle style like me you destroy lots of things.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

Just want to add two cents here. After lasik surgery I bought a pricey set of shades from Ocean Waves. www.oceanwaves.com. There are at least as good as Costa Del Mars maybe better. You can definitely see better on the water than with the Mart store glasses. Like Capt_Ultra says I can see things in the water that others don't know are there. The lense technology eliminates glare. One thing you get for the price is the lifetime guarantee. I have broken the frame( mine are not plastic) and OW repaired for free. After wearing these for several years now, I will replace with like kind no matter what the cost. Everyone I know who has tried this quality of sun glasses says the same thing.

ebbtide,<br /><br />Both are glass. The Maui's have a coating that is somewhat sensitive to damage, the Ban's are almost indestructible.<br /><br />Both brands I have are of the "aviator" style, thus the glass area is as large as possible. The Ban aviators come in two lense sizes, I would suggest opting for the larger.<br /><br />Believe me, no one sweats as much as I do. Both hug the face quite well and when I'm on the water I wear a band-just in case.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

well finally a subject I can relate to. I own a optical store (doesnt mean I know anything about glasses tho)The Maui Jims are really nice, but you will find that many more manufactures are making polarized lenses these days. Maui's are usually glass lenses, which might be prefereable for the abuse on a boat, fishing etc. But today a lot of lenses are poly,or plastic..which means scratches galore unless you treat them well ALWAYS rinse the lenses off with warm water, vodka,or gin before wiping and they will last alot longer. Poly is the safeest optical material, glass being the least safe. One problem no one mentioned is the way polarization does NOT alow you to see lcd,led readouts on instruments. This is a minor problem..just **** your head a little to the side and you will see just fine. I wear Revo shades...real pricey, but the lens has a antireflective coating on the inner surface, and a mirror glazing on the outer surface....I live in these glasses...they are my prescription....Bottom line search around....always get polarized but no need to spend 3 hundred dollars, like I said many companies are now making polarized glasses....hope this helps.

Re: SUnglasses help !!!!!!!!!!!

Costa has a lifetime warrantee with all of their glasses (it's like buying a Craftsman screwdriver at Sears). If there is a problem for any reason - send it back and they will repair/replace it - no questions asked - this is worth the price of admission for me. Try to get that with a Maui Jim or Ray Ban. (Just don't lose the glasses once you buy them)
