after having a new long engine fitted by marine engineer,i changed the oil in the sump after 20hours.i found he had at least 5lts of oil,well above the dipstick full mark.would this have caused any problems.the origanal hand book said 4.28 with new filter. 4.3ltr v6 merc

No. Excess oil of that amount is no problem. When the engine runs the oil is 'out and around' in the engine to do it's job and only some of it is in the sump.

High oil levels can lead to high oil temp, and possible piston and cylinder damage as well as bearing damage. Probably not in your case since thats not alot over the full mark.

Agreed. I've seen one block broken because of two mechanics working together. One thought the other drained it and he filled the specified amount by a hose with gauge. So it ended up running double portion. This was a Volvo truck engine that carries 48 litres of oil and the double amount simply had no way to go when they started it.
