Summerizing???

The place that winterizes my boat is telling me that I should bring my boat in to get summerized before I put it in the water this year. Should I do this and if so what do they actually do when summerizing a boat?

Thanks in advance

Re: Summerizing???

What kind of boat and motor setup do you have? What all do they do for the winterization? I'm lucky and have an outboard on a pontoon boat, all in the south where it rarely gets below freezing. I say this because I don't have to do really much of anything other than maintenance.

Maybe they want to do a "tune-up" to your boat and are just calling it "summerization"? I would ask the shop directly what all is involved in a summerization, and see what they say.

I would ask the shop what is invovled. Without knowing wether this is an inboard or an outboard, no one could possibly guess.

I know nothing about inboards, but "summerizing" an outboard is very easy and takes almost no time at all. I usually just replace fluids, charge the battery, check my hoses and wires, and then replace the spark plugs.

It depends on how they winterized it. The cheapest places just drain everything and leave the drains open and hoses off. Others do it so that about all you have to do is charge and connect the battery.

I'm with the others, what engine type do you have, what was done to winterize and what does the shop specifically say they do to summerize the engine? I have both an outboard and an I/O. The I/O I have professionally winterized, I'm in a freezing area, so they drain the engine and fill it with non-toxic anti-freeze, change the lower unit oil, remove the outdrive, greese it and reinstall it, check the belts, powersteering fluid, change the fuel filter, check the waterpump and fog the engine. Springtime I connect the batteries, hookup a water source and start the engine. After the engine clears of fog, I change the spark plugs.
Outboard: winterized, change the gear oil, check for worn wires and fog it. Springtime, I start the engine and after the fog has cleared, pull the plugs and either clean or change them.

I hope this info helps.

Re: Summerizing???

Sorry for the lack of info. I have a Glastron sx175 with a volvo 190hp. I had it winterized and had everything done to it.

Should I also change my plugs?

Thanks for the responses.

Re: Summerizing???

i would contact the dealer, and see what he does, for the money. question him on why this wasn't done when winterizing. proper winterizing and I/o usually means draining, pulling out drive, checking gimbal bearing, and bellows,, changing the impeller, fluids, adding anti freeze, and fogging. shink wrap opitional. all the owner should have to do in the springs is hook up the water, run the anti freeze out, clear the fog, change the plugs.

to us in the south this is all foreign. use the dahg thing all year. freezes put a light bulb in the dog house.
