I previously posted on outboard reagrding my 3.5 Yamaha AC Serial Number 642 S 20048
Prop is approx 7.5 inch diameter aluminium - but had a suplementary question about the ability of this small engine to do the job with the boat it is attached too, and the ability of the boat to carry 4.

Really this is primarily for my own comfort before going out to play in the summer

So, no plate on the boat, except the makers name. The boat is 14 foot Skipper ex-sailing dinghy,
fibreglass, twin skinned, with bouancy tanks, so it shouldn't sink even when capsized.

Beam is 5 foot.
Height at bow is 2 foot 6 inches (keel level to deck lne)
2 foot at midships
and 1 foot 3 inches at transom

We will be using it inshore tidal creeks and esturies, never more than quarter mile from land, and no big waves. Carrying up to 4 adults all weighing less than 200 pounds each.

thanks

Gybemark
I think boat is way under powered and overloaded. Might be or in a swimming pool or very small lake. I would say 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids maybe. I would want 15HP.

When you say it's an "ex-sailing dinghy", I assume it's a displacement hull (rounded bottom and a keel). If that's the case, you'll probably get 5-6 knots with a 3.5 and very little more with a bigger motor.

As far as the boat's ability, 4 people is crowded in a 14' boat. I'd keep the boat in protected water, at least until you get a good feel for it.

If you go out with 4 200 pounders in a 14' boat make sure they all can swim and wear life jackets even if you only run it in a swimming pool.

Typically boats about that size are rated at approximately 525 pounds for passengers.
and about 700 lbs. total weight, people, gear
motor, etc. I wouldnt exceed that and wear safety devises stay close to shore.Keep in mind
tides may be too powerful for the motor with that load.

Just a little update for you all. I gave it it's first 'river' trail at my sailing club, and as soon as a started the engine three people want a lift to the other bank, so with me , my daughter and 3 others we made a safe and easy journey. No problems at all.

The 3.5 HP yamaha dosn't make it go fast, no where near planning! but is certainly sufficient for the pottering I have in mind.

Thanks all
