Sudden Shifter stuck in Reverse

After getting my boat pressure washed this morning at the launch in the Pacific , my mercury 1995 Mercury Black Maxx is stuck in reverse. Can't seem to figure out just what is wrong. Have checked all of the cables. All and any suggestions are welcome. On the last two weeks of fishing vacation. Thanks:blue

Try disconnecting the shift cables from the engine then shift into gear at the engine (if you do this while engine is off, have someone turn the prop as you shift). This test will tell you if the problem lies in the control box (the shifter or cables) or the engine itself. Sometimes, the clutch dog wears out and is a likely cause of stuck in reverse.

May need to spin the prop manually while shifting. Some motors won't go into reverse without the motor is running.
