Ok--you electrical engineers out there-- I have one for you.

I want to replace a Force plain rectifier with an old Chrysler Motorola electronic regulator/rectifier. This regulator is finned for heat rejection. I know it has a couple of fairly large capacitors in it but I do not know what else. Unit is potted -- need to destroy it to take it apart.

The Force has a 20 pole alternator and the Chrysler has a 12 pole alternator. I suspect that the 20 pole puts out a higher frequency A/C.

Would this 60% higher frequency be harmful to the Motorola regulator/rectifier? I have asked a couple of electricians and they could not give me an answer.

Re: Substituting Regulators

On the back of your tach you should be able to select the number of poles you want to connect to for an accurate reading.

I am looking at a Teleflex-Morse wiring diagram and they only show the tach recording 6P max.........but they do show Force as one of the engine options where it will work. This particular data sheet is for "4 thru 12 magnetic pole" engines. Says it will not work on the old Force 20 pole.......but you have the tach that WILL work on Force 20P engines; you just need to adapt it to a different drive.

If running blind, hook it up and idle the engine. RPM's should be slightly below 1000. Turn the selector on the back of the tach till you get the reading.

You might want to go to the www, go to T/M site and look up "Outboard Engine Tachometers 4 through 12 Pole Alternators" and read the options at the bottom. If you can't get it to work correctly you may need to modify things and the instructions give you an Idea as to what to do.

Maybe they have a data sheet on a 20P tach and on that sheet may tell you what you have to do for your interconnect.
