submerged merc, what to do?

I need some merc savy advice. I have a line on a 1989 90hp Merc that was submerged in saltwater for one nite. The skiff had sunk in the evening and the next morning the mechanic was able to retrieve the boat and motor. The merc was flushed out with fresh water and they changed all the fluids and ran winterizing fuilds, oils through the whole motor. Although it took a little while (because of the perserving fluids) they were able to get the motor runing again and it ran fine. It has now not been run for about 3 weeks. I will be doing a compression test on the engine and will be seeing it running with water muffs. The bottom end was just rebuilt and it supposedly has a new powerhead. The mechanic had just put on a new strator and starter motor. This engine could probably be had for about $900 to $1100 Canadian about $500 American. My question is should I take a gamble if it runs fine or stay away from this altogether and pursue another engine. Another 90hp in this condition but not submerged would run anywhere from $2500 to $3200 Can. Good used 90 to 125hp engines are also hard to find and the dealers can't keep them in stock. As soon as they have them they are gone.

Allot of motors go swimming. If you can get some assurance from the mechanic or say even a 30 day warranty I would go for it. I would get it on a boat and truly water test it.

Bob

This motor was sumerged during an entire tidal episode. That means that the tide had it's time to deposit all the crap that it brings in an out directly into your engine. That's not good. The fact that this is up and running is good but I would really think twice about useing it as a daily runner unless it is torn down.

Re: submerged merc, what to do?

Thanks for the constructive advice, but I still had some questions about how the electrical components of the outboard would hold out. I was told that as soon as the wiring harness, coils, stator diodes ect, had salt water introduced to them the components would continue to break down over time. I was wondering if any one out there had come across this situation and how well they faired, keeping in mind the outboard was submerged for no more than 12 hrs. The other question I had is how difficult would it be to change the electrical components on the outboard and is the stator a sealed unit, that might not be affected by being submerged. Thanks again.

Here is the deal, BC...the lenght of time the motor is down is not as important as how long it has been up in the air AFTER a submersion without running....the accepted timeframe on a submersion is either up and RUNNING or down in pieces in 24 HOURS...any longer than that and the crank bearings start to rust track.......and engine failure will follow...by what you have said, I would RUN away from this...it is no deal....

Ditto........And by the way the blue book shows that is the upper end of the price range.
