Submerged 9.9Honda 4stroke stalls with choke in

We completely submerged our Honda 9.9HP 4-stroke (1989) motor in the salt water 6 months ago. It was submerged for only a minute or so. It has not run the same since....continually stalling if trolling slow. It runs fine at full speed, but as soon as we slow down to close to idle speed, it stalls. It starts fine with the choke pulled out. When the choke is pushed in it stalls. We have to put it in gear while the choke is still partially out, increase the speed, and then push the choke fully in. We opened up the carburator to find some sand-like particles clogging things up. We cleaned it out....but that did not solve the problem. We've changed the plugs, fuel filter, thermostat. It seems that the mechanical action of pushing the choke in fully, thereby opening the air intake, causes the motor to stall out. We've tried adjusting the carb. Does anyone have anymore ideas? We have run out....

thanks a lot,
Mike

I would look again at the carburator it would only take 1 missed sand like particle to make it run like that. About the only thing that stops the 4 stroke honda is water in the fuel or carburator. Have you cleaned the fuel tank of any water?

Yes, we disposed of the old gas and filled the tank with new gas and added some fuel stabilizer. Pretty sure the carb is now clean. Seems like when the air passage is completely open (choke pushed in) is when the motor stalls. Thanks for your speedy input....

Carburetor or fuel pump, there's still something wrong with the fuel/air delivery system.

c/6

Hooty

I has some bad gas and replaced the fuel filter with only one avilable which was longer, it pinched the gas line enough to reduce the flow as it ran like that. The honda fuel filter is short and fits much better in the allocated space.
Hope you find the problem.

fisherchief,

You still have carb. problems. Most likely, idle jet. These engines are very sensative to debris in the fuel system.

Your fuel pump is OK, otherwise it wouldn't run at high speeds.

It's in the float bowl of the carb. It will need to come apart again.

Use SEAFOAM, buy it at a NAPPA auto parts store for about $5.00. Mix a small amount of gas in your container and mix it about 10 oz gas to 1 oz of Seafoam and try running it through. It will also get rid of any carbon you might have.

Seafoam does not make sand or salt go away.

The carb will have to be partially dis-assembled, not just opened up. The idle jet(s) need to be removed, cleaned, blown out with compressed air, then re-assembled and adjusted.

BTW, if submerged in saltwater, motor should have been serviced as outlined in owners manual.

Just a thought along what Rolmops said, the "sand" like particles may have been corrosion particles in the carburetor from the aluminum contacting salt water. The description you gave on how you cleaned the carburetor after your dunking seems incomplete. As others have suggested above, the engine is running lean at idle. Most likely the idle circuit is still clogged with a combination of gum and salt corrosion. A thorough and proper carburetor cleaning with solvent, pressurized air, and elbow grease will fix it I bet.

just a correction to one of your replys- the jet thats located in the float boal is not the idle jet. that is your high speed jet. this carb does not use a fuel "jet" for idle. when you disassemble carb again, look right behind the butterfly for tiny holes. this is the exit for fuel coming from the idle circuit. try cleaning again, but the idle circuit on small hondas are almost microscopic. chances are your goona have to replace the carb. believe it or not, it only goes for about 150 bucks.

Well, thanks to all those who replied! Looks like we got 'er fixed. We cleaned out the "slow jet" which runs up the center of the main nozzle in the carb. We used a piece of "6 test" fish line to feed thru the microscopic jet. This was our last try before taking it in to the shop! Luckily, after 4 sessions working at this problem, it looks to be fixed. The motor now idles fine with the choke fully in (airflow open).
