Hello All
I have the opportunity of buying a 50B Tldi that was on a boat that sank
Now currently the engine is seized and a quick look down the bores shows rust so the engine internals are probably toast
Just wondering what the thoughts are on the rest of the engine peripherals, ECU,Compressor, oil pump, injectors and starter motor etc being still ok to use
The leg should be fine as should the power tilt/trim, The motor is at a dealer and they want $900 dollars for it, I have the exact same motor so was thinking about keeping this for parts down the track if needed
Oh and according to the dealer the motor wasn't running when it went under but he couldn't tell me how long it had been submersed for
Thanks for any advice

Expect everything to do with any electronics to be shot. Also expect anything to do with the powerhead to be toast. The dealer is suggesting a price that is roughly equal to the US value of a new LU.

Re: Submerged 50 TLDI

salt water? I had a 200 mercury once that sunk in salt water (got a very good deal on the boat and motor so I took my chances) on a wellcraft 20 CC. I took it apart, washed everything in copious amounts of fresh water. blow dried it and let dry in the sun for a week. Had to replace all the bearings, rings, hone cyclinders, etc. But the electronics survived in good shape. Used it for several years (Wilmington NC)before I sold it and moved inland. If the motor was running when it sunk ignore everything I just said!

One thing is a submerged salted engine left standing for X periods of time, other having it washed and taking care inmediately after sinking, at least will have less electronics issues. Will have my doubts if it's better or worst for an engine sinking on/off with opened or closed reed valves as you will have water intrussion through prop & exhaust upwards head as you can't have pistons blocking exhaust port at same time, naughty water pressure will find it's way inside...

If you think it's a good price to pay for, buy it and try all electronics on same good motor, if luckily enough could still be operative ?

Re: Submerged 50 TLDI

Thanks everyone
I will just let it go for now, I might offer a silly low price and grab it if he accepts
My motor has only done 30 or so hours and I don't need any parts as yet but thought it would be worth storing for later but as this one has sat for a while with no attempt to clean it the parts worth having are probably stuffed
Thanks again

Yep, blaming the economy now a days go for a hostile purchase offer. One thnig is to buy an operational motor other a pile of rusted junk sitting indefinitely.
