They are showing up here in the James river towards the end of summer too. Researchers have been netting, measuring, and tagging them for the past couple of years to determine if they are spawning and returning yearly. We see or hear them jumping quite a bit while out fishing. sounds like someone dropping a car into the river sometimes!

We are seeing tons of them in the Great Lakes and I have managed a couple hook ups, with landing one that was over 50 inches. I have seen them here well over 6 feet long, and fought with it for 45 minutes or more. Imagine seeing the head on one side of the boat and the tail on the other!! That one had to be 7-8 feet long, toyed with me for an hour then went deep into the channel, and broke my walleye gear with a flick of the tail! They offer free permits to target them here, but I would never keep one, mine are all non targeted hook ups.
