My oldest son graduates from Purdue in the spring (hopefully) and he has always wanted to go out west sturgeon fishing. I thought that would be a great graduation present and a fun trip for the both of us. Does anyone know any good guides out there (say the Snake River)? I hate to go on website information alone to pick a guide. Has anyone fished for sturgeon out there? I understand they can get 7 - 9 feet long and weigh 200-300 lbs. Any help you can offer would be great.

This place is incredible... not sure if you could consider Canada.... but it's hard to beat.

My brother goes there once every two years to keep his chiropractor in business. AMAZING.

Re: Sturgeon Fishing

If it's sturgeon you want, then the Columbia River is the place to be. But no matter where you go, be sure to check out the fishing regulations for that area, because some areas only allow you to keep a fish for a few months before they kick into catch and release mode! Either way, be sure to take some Tylenol for after the catch, because these fish will fight. I have personally seen sturgeon of at least 15 feet in length. Your son will have a blast for sure. Most of the guides I have seen on the internet for the Columbia river region are locals here who are good at what they do. If you want more history on them, I would recommend calling a boat shop in their area and asking them, they see these guys from time to time and usually know of their reputations and success rates. Good luck and have fun!

Interviewing a volunteer for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games) Interviewer: First, would you like to explain why you are interested in this job? Interviewee: Well, I think it?s very meaningful to participate in something as special as this; you know, to be able to welcome overseas friends and to make them feel at home, what a privilege! Interviewer: Nice, and what will you do when an overseas guest asks for help? Interviewee: That?s easy. I?ll just try my best to help them! If they ask for directions, I?ll make sure they know where they are on the map and then point them in the right direction. If they need suggestions for entertainment, I?ll show them around. If they are short of money, I?ll? give them money! Interviewer: Give them money? Are you sure? Why not give me some? Interviewee: Hehe ? sorry, that?s a mistake. I meant I?ll try my best to help them. Interviewer: You?ve got the right idea, and have a very good attitude indeed. And by the way, what will you do if you encounter some unfriendly guests that have some unreasonable requests? Interviewee: Well, in that case, I?ll stay calm and politely explain the reason why I can?t be of more assistance. Trust me. I?ll be able to find the balance between being a good host to foreigners and maintaining the dignity, virtue and honor of our Chinese traditions. Interviewer: I understand it?s quite a delicate balance. And I?m very happy to see that you understand this too - you are hired! Interviewee: Really? Hoo-ray! Interviewer: Behave yourself! Re: Sturgeon Fishing

JM your fishing trip will be fantastic no matter where you choose to catch sturgeon. Catch and release of these HUGE fighting fish is great fun but the snapshot doesn't do the belly any justice. The lower Columbia River season starts around the end of May and runs to the end of July. (ROUND FIGURES!!!)Check the regs on that as the fish are more regulated and "keepers" are measured differently. Adjust your visit to the middle of the season as you will most likely do better/better catch ratio then.

To avoid hassles, jump on a charter out of Ilwaco, WA or Warrenton, OR. Those guys are pretty darn good at catching fish and the dollar cost isn't astronomical (around $100-125). Guide services are generally twice the cost of a charter and they can't guarantee you fish any better than the charters can. Either one- jump on the boat and start to fish. They provide you with all you need to succeed.

Where ever you go be sure you can take some home. That is a treat you won't want to miss. (Smoked is even better.) Hope you get a tail walker... they are so awesome and fun to fight. The trip will surely be remembered no matter what size you catch.
