I know the Merc 3.0 is a GM engine. But I cannot place what a 3.0 GM engine powered. We all know what the 5.0 and 5.7 is, but what is the 3.0? I see it is in the same family as the old 2.5. The only 2.5 I can remember was the old Pontiac Iron Duke. Thanks.

Re: Stupid question?

The engines were used in the Chevy II from inception around 1962 till early 70s.
There was a 151 CI and a 181 CI.
I had one in a 1972 boat, 19'. It did about 40 MPH WOT and pulled skiers at 3400 (28 MPH).
They are dependable. think about it, the engine was designed in '62 and still being used by mercruiser.
Over 40 years, they would have gotten it right by now.....
Captharv

Re: Stupid question?

These old iron 3.0 were more of a industrial use type motor, they could be found in tow motors and tractor type equipment also, due to there reliability and low end grunt.
