I aquired a 1989 85hp force about 7 months ago
This motor has been setting for about 1 1/2 years
I finally got around to messing with it,put it on a stand, hooked up fuel tank, and ignition switch,Started right up ran for 10-15 sec and i killed it cause i dont have any water peeing out
upon looking there is no pee hole like on my evinrud,Where do the water exit out?Does it all go out the exaust?Or is it supose to come out the two holes mid way down?

Re: stupid question

Most through the exhaust. Some will come out the holes on the leg. Sort of a spray not a stream. At high speed all goes through the exhaust.

Re: stupid question

Thanks, Right now im not getting any water coming out anywhere not a drop,i've only ran it a couple of times 10-20 seconds,i noticed this motor has a thermostat above the #1 clyinder, could it be that im not running it long enough to open up the thermostat,Is there any other way to tell if its pumping water. The guy i got it from said he recently put in awater pump kit befor i got it,like i said its been setting for a year and a half.

Re: stupid question

My 75 HP pumps water through the 2 holes on the leg as soon as you start it, on muffs or in the water. Are you running it on muffs or in the water? If it is on muffs you'll be able to see the water coming out the exhuaust snout. Sounds like you got a bad impeller or a blockage.

Re: stupid question

above and infront of the thermostat should be a threaded plug. you can get a fitting with a barbed nipple on one end and 1/8" pipe thread on other and plumb a telltale (pee hole) for your comfort. my 85 sprays a mist out of the exhaust holes but force engines do not have a telltale with a stream like the 'rude.

for the price and peace of mind i would put in a new impeller, then you know.

Re: stupid question

I tryed running it on muffs first but they dont seal real good and it leakes real bad, so i put in a tub of water, when its in the water i see no movement of any kind. what woulde it be like to take out the thermostat and just leave the housing off and start it for a second,or would there be a pressure issue?

Re: stupid question

My advice is to drop the lower unit, replace the impeller, (make sure the key is in there), clean out the water pump, reinstall, and try it again.

You should be getting water out of the back from those two holes. If you look in those holes you should see the rubber hose that leads to it. You can also look down from the top in the back of the cowel downward and see where the rubber tube connects from the interior lower leg to the exterior lower leg.

If you're not getting water out of the holes while its running, then either your impeller, water pump, water lines, or the rear rubber exhaust connector is messed up.

Best of luck!
