Stupid question? Gas additives

I have a 1979 Spirit 9.9. It calls for leaded gas with 85 oct.Should I use a lead additive sub and would using the highest octang rated gas help with fouling? Stupid question but the answers may help alot of other guys.

Howdy, Oagmaster.<br /><br />Maybe in 1979 leaded 85 octane was the best available.<br /><br />Modern unleaded fuels are much better for 2 strokes, as long as they don't contain any alcohols.<br /><br />Unleaded 87 octane regular (no alcohol) will be fine for your engine. Higher octanes will only deflate your wallet faster and do nothing for your engine.<br /><br />Good luck.
