I'm shure this is a stupid question but how do I shift my stringer out drive? Do I ease it into gear alowing it to click click click until it engages or just throw it into gear?

Put it into gear smartly or quick. In other words if you hear grinding, those are expensive and hard to find parts turning to powder.

Which Stringer do you have? The above is pretty much correct, but if you're hearing grinding of any kind on an ES ... stop shifting.

Google "Images for shifter dog in Stringer outdrive". You will see the mechanical part that must move fore and aft quickly, to engage within less than half a turn of the prop shaft. Make sure engine is set to a correct idle.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, for me anyway.......

Steady as she goes.....

there are 3 very different types of shifting used on stringer drives. So, not a stupid question, but maybe an incomplete one. Year, and model or a picture of your outdrive will get a better answer.

I will try to get a pic after work but the boat is a 83 sun runner 18' open bow with the 230hp omc and stringer 800.
