Re: Stupid Puter.....It Ain't the Operator.....
I have an idea, but don't know if it will work. Maybe someone else who knoes more can give this a yea or a nay...

Get your hands on some partitioning software, like Partition Magic. You should be able to create a new partition with the unused portion of your hard drive. Then set the new partition to be the active partition and install the operating system there, while the old OS and all your data is still on the inactive partition. Then install your CD burner software. If all this works up to this point, you would then be able to explore the directories and find all your data. I would burn it all onto a CD, but you could just move it all into the directories of your new partition. If I was doing this, I would burn it all to a CD as soon as I could get to it...that's why I suggested installing the CD burner software. If you don't have a CD burner yet, here's a good excuse to go buy one.

If I was doing this, I would then reformat the entire thing and start fresh, but some might say I am just anal---I wouldn't argue with that. But I have been using partitions for years and I keep my ALL my data on the non-OS partition, and back it up to a CD once in a while, just in case something happens (like what happened to you).

I have an older version of Partiotion Magic (5.0) on a floppy that's bootable. I think that's what you'll need. I think the newer versions of PM are not bootable, but I'm not positive.

I hope this is all possible and is successful for you!

-dd-
