Rutland Herald. This happened today at 1:14 PM

Police arrest man who claimed to have bomb

A man who claimed to have a bomb in a West Street pharmacy in Rutland was brought down and arrested by city police who said they used Tasers to apprehend him.

The Rite-Aid pharmacy was evacuated and the top of West Street was closed to traffic at noon Tuesday when a man claiming to have a bomb jumped over the pharmacy counter, police at the scene said.

The man's name and the reason for his threat wasn't released immediately by police at the scene who said more information would be available in the afternoon. Police also couldn't confirm whether the device the man brought to the store was a bomb.

Police could be seen entering the pharmacy with guns drawn soon after the store was evacuated. But a Rutland police sergeant in charge of the scene said police were able to subdue the man using Tasers which deliver an electric jolt that temporarily paralyzes their target.

The suspect, wearing shorts and a button-down shirt, was in handcuffs as city officers escorted him from the store to a nearby police cruiser. As he walked to the car, the man shouted toward a small crowd of onlookers and Rite-Aid employees who watched from the edge of Main Street Park on the other side of West Street.

What the man was shouting was unclear, although several of his words were obscenities.

There were no reported injuries in the incident.

Okay as many of you know I have a very detailed explosives background. I can not believe the LEO used taser's. Had it been a real "device" they could have detonated it upon firing the taser or even the police radio signal RF could have done it.:facepalm::facepalm:

I am glad they got the idiot in custody however, I doubt they realize the jeopardy they were in. It's time to conduct an IED class with all the officer's.

This incident happened two blocks from my office.

Write an editorial to your local paper. The public has a right to know what kind of idjits are 'protect and serve' ing them! At the least send a letter to the Chief.

Re: Stupid move

I have a pretty detailed explosives background too. Unofficially. ;)

Seems these pharmacies are the more popular option over robbing banks these days. If they're robbing for money, they're usually spending it on drugs later. Might as well cut out the middle man...

The taser detonation thing was the first thought to cross my mind as I started reading that, and like I said, my background is totally unofficial!

Bob seems to have made a fair and reasonable comment about the possibility that the police training may be lacking in that specific area.
How big is Rutland? I'll bet less than 20K population...and VT itself is relatively sparse in numbers.

Training budgets may be more typically spent in regional priorities as compared to those of a larger centre. There is only so much specialty training that small places can undertake. Would Rutland even have a Bomb Squad per se?

To dump on the responding officers (I'll assume that "idjits" is a typo for effect and not representative of the poster's literacy level) is IMO unreasonable and unfair.

I'd sure hate to be critical before the full story is told. Maybe they had determined that he had no actual explosive device and are to be appauded for using non-lethal force. We just dont know for sure.

Re: Stupid move

Agree with Tim. There is no fair reason to call the LEOs names. I also agree with Bob. Those cops need training.

I got involved in an attempted Pharmacy robbery in Ft. Lauderdale back in the 80s. As I was entering the store a young man came running at me with the pharmacist in hot pursuit. I stuck my foot out and tripped the perp, then helped the Pharmacist hold him down until the LEOs arrived.

He had presented a bogus prescription for some controlled substance, then when the pharmacist pressed the alarm button he pretended to have a gun in his pocket. When the pharmacist didn't buy that either he took off. Poor kid was really "strung out" and shaking like a leaf.

The cops scolded me for interfering in police business. Go Figure.

Thank you for that assumption, Tim. I am quite literate, but I am also Southern......

Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my response. Some valid points have been made here. I hope the boys in blue knew what they were doing. Also glad no one was hurt.

Re: Stupid move

My plan..... I will have a conversation with the Police Chief and the Commandant of the State Training Academy. I have the ability to obtain an audience with both.

A letter to the editor will only start a flame war and is not the route I want to go.

We have a huge amount of trained people in VT due to the high volume of deployed and previously deployed soldier's all trained with dealing in IED's.

My intent is to prevent any future problems and increase the safety of all involved. I am not calling names since the officer's involved are acquaintances of mine.

Re: Stupid move

Could it be that the officer in charge and officers at the scent were able to determine that the suspect did in fact NOT have a bomb on his person or in his posession and act accordingly?

I'm not a LEO but I've learned in working with them that if you were not there, dont be arm chair quarterbacking some one elses situation.

No problem....and my comment was a bit smart-a**; not what i had intended. I just tend to stick up for LEOs as a rule. They have a tough job and are usually underfunded, underpaid, and underappreciated....at least IMO.
Bob's approach is laudable!

Remember when in the Navy working with things that well were not inert, work leg stats, or conductive soled shoes to keep static charges out of the picture. Tis base during WWII lost 2 ships and a pier when things went high order.

Re: Stupid move

UPDATE

I had a great conversation today with the LEO in charge of the operation and he was the one who deployed his taser...... and got the rest of the story ;)

The man with the "device" was well known to the police and is a transient with very recent police involvement earlier in the week. The guy was behind the counter filling his mouth with pills and the "device" was out of arms length. When the police told him to stop he kept on eating pills and encouraged the police to shoot him. It was an apparent suicide attempt. There was another transient (never a shortage of them around here) who tipped off the police that the guy was nuts and he was only carrying his clothing.

The guy was tased and taken into custody. No police radios or cell phones were used or even powered up.....they were turned off. I agreed to teach a high explosive class to the department and touch upon IED's and related explosive hazards. Most of the new officer's have never seen a high explosive or understand the potential power.

The guy who committed the crime is crazy and I heard he appeared in court today in pajamas accessorized with leg chains, waist chain and nice shiny hand and leg cuffs. :D

LOL
The public should be very afraid. Years ago I was a contract driver for the Post Office. One night as I had just got to my truck to head out, LEO and the bomb squad show up and lock the building down. They had a possible bomb. They brought the package out and set it in the center of the dock parking area. Two bomb squad officers approach the package slowly ... slowly ... then (I swear to God) one of them kicks it and they both turn and run!!!
