Stupid Mistake!!!

I hooked up my battery opposite polarity Negative on Positive and vice versa. When I turned the ignition, the fuse blew. I changed the fuse and it worked fine. However, after running it for a while, it didn't turn over. Also after two hours of running, when I tried to crank it to flush, it didn't turn. I waited a few minutes and it worked fine again. Did I fry something? Help. 1999 Honda 50 hp can no longer be trusted. :(

The fuse should have kept you from damaging the engine. But should have does not mean it did. Since it ran for awhile afterward, I would look at something else being wrong.

Any other suggestions of what to look for? Thanks Elvin.

Re: Stupid Mistake!!!

As vague as it sounds...It could be anything. Check your compression, check for spark and check your gear oil(you would be surprised as to why in this case). If those three are ok...Then look really hard at your fuel system starting from the fuel itself and working towards the engine: tank, fuel line, fuel pump, etc.

I think youy have a bad battery connection. I'm still surprised at how sensitive 600 amps can be to a seemingly apparent good terminal connection. Sand those posts down and the connecting wires and reef them onto the terminal posts. The fact that it worked then didn't work might just have been a vibration strong enough to break/make the connection.

Throw the darned wing nuts away and replace them with stainless hex nuts and internal or external tooth washers. Put a wrench on the nuts to get them tight.

Re: Stupid Mistake!!!

It may be that you fried the engine's charging system (rectifier) and that the engine was running off the battery, and drained it enough so that it can't turn over the engine. Try to hand/pull start it, and check the output voltage. I assume it must have a charging system since it is an electric start.

It was a loose battery connection. Thank you all

Re: Stupid Mistake!!!

Can a rectifer be added to a pull start Nissan 8.8hp for charging a battery? Is anything else needed?
