I can swim and or tread water. But when the ship went full stop and announced swim call over the Marianas?-7 mile deep trench, the enjoyment of a cooling swim turned into a fear of the deep. Haven't come up with a satisfactory explaination yet.

Re: Stupid human idiosyncracy

it's like being more afraid of flying than the real danger--the drive to the airport.

It's like being afraid on a ledge at 80 feet but not at 30.

you can drown in three feet of water; it just takes longer and makes a more embarassing obituary.

I can fly a plane - but am affraid of heights. Won't go near the glass railing on top level of shopping mall. Something about two good wings and a humming propeller make it all OK. Don't even think about it.

^^^That's another one ^^^ Plane, no problem, glide to a landing of some sort. Helicopter! No gliding there.

Pretty much the same for me. Used to fly aerobatics and flying inverted in an open cockpit biplane was a fun way to kill time and some what theraputic. Replacing shingles on my one and a half story pony barn was about one step away from a panic attack.

Met a full USCG captain at a conference twenty years ago who was the head of all USCG Aviation at the time and was one of those twenty thousand hour guys who had flown just about everything the Coasties had at the time. While talking aviation he confessed that he couldn't change storm windows at his home from a step ladder.

Actually a helicopter can perform a feat called auto-rotation if they have enough altitude and control functions. Set the rotor angle son they get spinning and has you approach the ground change pitch so they produce lift and in theory you could touch down at amost complete hover. Timing is everything.

I have a small air-craft, and have about 1500 hours of flying time, But don't ask me to go up a step latter or on a roof it just wont happen.

I'm with you foodfisher, deep water is one thing, 7 miles is another.
There are things down there that no one has even seen, and the stuff they have brought up is ugly at best.
