I'm trying to remove the inner and outer transom plates on my '86 alpha1 for the first time ever. I've got the steering unhooked and the 6 nuts and bolts out but cant budge the plates. Any tricks or sweet spots to pry or whack to get it loose?

the inside tansom sheild should be easy unless your y tube is on post a photo once you get that off put some nuts on the inside studs and whack the studs with a hammer! use hardwood if your a bad aim.
the nuts will keep the outer transom from falling and help if you ding the thread

No Y-pipe, thru-hull exhaust. I'll try rapping the studs in the morning... neighbors wont like it at 1am :D

I haven't done a Alpha 1, but have pulled a #1 Drive and a Alpha1 GenII. Both of those had 8 fasteners (nuts/studs or bolts) holding the gimble housing and transom plate on the transom.

I could be wrong, but I'd look for 2 more fasteners holding everything together.

Ayuh,...

The Gen.IIs,+ Bravos use 8 studs....

Mod.1s,+ the Alpha 1 only have 6...

Tapping on the nutted studs,+ possibly wooden tapered shims can be used to break the housings free....

There are 6 outside studs, but I believe there are two bolts on either side or just below the hole where the trim-limit sensor wires come through the transom plate (above where the drive shaft come through) that are holding you up.

Yep - haulnass15 has a post where he has rebuilt his transom and you can see where the six bolts/studs are:

It's hard to see, but from this picture, you can also see where the top two bolts should be as well:

Hah I left the two bolts right below the engine mounts in ... totally missed them. Had 6 fasteners out, thought I was done. Thanks a ton for the posts & pics guys, big help. The plates came right off.
