I'm trying to change the gear oil and can't get the screw loose. What do you call the tool that you hit with a hammer, and where can I get one?

Impact wrench ... got mine at Sears about 40 years ago! Came with both flat and Phillips screwdriver bits.

Impact driver. Looks like a really beefy screw driver with socket style bits.

Re: stuck screw

The thing I like about mine is that the flat blade bits that came with mine are different sizes, including a wide one that fits the full length of the slot in the screw and rather than the normal sloped tip that most screwdrivers have, these insert bits have parallel sides to the bit and that makes a whopping difference in doing what you're doing.....to the point where you may not have to smack the end of it to get the screw out (impact function).

Re: stuck screw

One more point: The direction of rotation of the tip when you smack it. There is a place on the wrench to change direction and if it is not clear which way makes the strike turn it ccw, then put the wrench on a suitable surface (hard) and smack it while watching which way the blade turns. Mine takes a pretty stout whack to make it turn, that's one reason why I try the tool without smacking first. Amazing how many times a good tip and a nice fat body to grab onto makes the difference and out comes the screw without having to resort to impact.

Re: stuck screw

As a rule, if the screw looks bad and I can use an impact driver...I will. This really saves on buggering up the slots.

Re: stuck screw

Thanks, I found one at O'Reilly auto parts for $12.99. It worked great.
