Stuck or Seized??

After posting a want ad on the online classifieds for a boat needing work, someone emailed me saying that he had a boat that was in pretty good shape but needed work on the wood trim and floor (he said that there was a soft spot). He also stated that the engine was "stuck" from sitting for so long but he had sprayed it with some lube that day. Now to me, "stuck" sounds alot like "seized" and would likely need a complete rebuild done, however Im pretty new at this and Im wondering what you guys think. Even if it is seized, it might be a good deal if I can get it cheap and do a complete engine rebuild.

Stuck could be siezed. It just might take a starter and breaker bar combo.Someone turns the key while you reef on a breaker bar.
Or it could be a siezed outdrive locking up the motor.
I have removed a head and used a 2x4 and a 10# sledge to free up a motor. It ran fine after that,Marvel Mystery oil is a great reliever.J

Everything about that message says to me "stay away"....

Freeing the motor would probably be the least of your concerns if it can even be done, without scaring the cylinder linings.

Soft spots in the floor indicate that the floor needs to be replaced, the beam could be rotted out, the transom could be junk, I'm sure the interior is also ruined and needs a re-cover, at best.

The stuck could mean many things, seized, bad starter, seized outdrive, a combination of all.

You will be dropping a ton of money into this to get it right

Seized is the first thing to come to mind, however, if it had not been started for a long time it could get stuck. Pull the plugs, squirt a little lite oil in each cyl and it will probably free up.

Re: Stuck or Seized??

I got pictures from the guy. He wants 1500 for which seems pretty good considering there is still a complete engine in the boat. Im looking for something that will be a long term project anyways. Im not too concerned about having it in the water by next summer as working on the boat, learning about the ins and outs of it and building it exactly how I want it is half the fun for me. Check out the pics and let me know what you think

Here's what you need to do - RUN - don't walk.

I recently towed a similar boat to the local landfill because I couldn't give it away. You really do not want a boat that has an OMC stringer drive... soft spots in the floor... a "stuck engine." Certainly not unless he is paying you the $1,500.

Hey - take heart!

If you enjoy projects and are capable mechanically, there are a lot of good deals that you can find. BUT - you do want to find a boat that has a good basis to start with. I have no doubt you can find a mid to late 80's boat with a Mercruiser drive and GM engine combination that will be easy to work on and have tons of parts available. Just keep looking and do what you already did - ask here first for advice. Wise indeed! :D

I pulled this baby home for 2 grand last October. SeaRay Sundancer 270. Twin Mercruiser 260's ran like a champ. I ran it for a couple of months and sold it because I was sick of paying marina fees.

The deals are out there...

And I just pulled this one home for 300 bucks.
