Stuck Lower Unit

[TERRAPINFLYER]

I have a 1987 225 Johnson and I am trying to change the water pump. I have everything un-bolted and It will drop 1/2" and no further. I have it in reverse and I unscrewed the shifter. It has been five years since I did it last could anyone help me if I have forgotten something.

Sounds like it's just binding on the drive shaft. Put a couple of the outside bolts in a few turns to support the LU and use the key to turn it over. Most times that will pop the driveshaft out enough to unstick everything. Definitely put the bolts in beforehand though. You don't want to drop the LU on the floor.

better yet remove the plugs, and turn over by hand, less likely to burr the splines.
